Egeskov

Welcome to Egeskov – Egeskov is for the whole family and features one of Europe’s finest Renaissance buildings, the beautiful castle garden, a fantastic playground with a huge maze, Treetop Walking, exhibitions with vintage cars, motorcycles and much more – in other words the perfect setting for Heartland Festival.

The Living Castle at Egeskov

Egeskov Castle is a very special place, as it is one of Europe’s finest and best-preserved Renaissance castles with a real moat, spire, knight’s hall and a very detailed, almost living masonry with whimsical and scary creatures in the castle’s thick walls. Although Count Michael Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille and Princess Alexandra of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg live in the castle with their children, they love to have guests – you are more than welcome inside the castle to explore the atmospheric walls.

The Gardens

The first large gardens at Egeskov were laid out around 1713. The inspiration came from Danish castle gardens at Fredensborg and Frederiksborg but also the castle garden at Versailles in France. The secret garden spaces are surrounded by hedges, the most voluminous of them now eight meters high. A corner of Dyrehaven was also included in the landscape, with free-standing trees and large lawns. Today this area goes by the name The English Garden and is the center of Heartland Festival.

In the past, the Egeskov Castle garden has received many awards, including in 2012, when Egeskov was recognized by the European Garden & Heritage Network and was awarded the European Garden Award.

The story of
Egeskov

Located in the beautiful South Funen countryside, you will find the more than 460-year-old castle. It was built by sheriff Frands Brockenhuus and was completed in 1554. During this time in Denmark there was a lot of uncertainty and riots, which led to landowners building castles, which were difficult to enter and occupy. This also applied to Egeskov, which was laid out in the middle of a lake. Legend says that the amount of oak used to build the castle was so massive that an entire forest was used. Hence Egeskov Castle got its name (red. Ege translate oak).

Throughout the year you can experience various events at Egeskov, e.g. LUMINIS, Sankthansaften, MC-meeting, Egeskov Christmas market, Halloween and more. For further information stay updated via Egeskov’s website.
